Its your final year of school. College and life after high school are looming ahead. Being organized is a must so there are few surprises that can put a wrench in your plans.

The following is a checklist for college bound seniors to be better prepared for what their last year in high school will entail.

Fall (September to November)

  1. Finalize your college list
  2. Visit prospective colleges to get a feel for the campuses
  3. Consider options for early acceptance and get letters of recommendation required
  4. Register for SAT, ACT. Its your last chance.
  5. Fill out colleges applications before the deadlines.
  6. Make an appointment with your guidance counselor to make sure all your prospective colleges get what they need.
  7. Start working on your college application essays.
  8. Explore prospective colleges’ financial aid requirement and plan your college budget.

Winter (December-February)

  1. Schedule college interviews
  2. Complete your FAFSA to get the most financial assistance for college
  3. Continue your hunt for scholarships
  4. Request that your high school send your first semester grades to every college that you applied to. Remember, schools will continue to track your grades as you finish out your senior year, so now’s no time to slack.
  5. Verify with your counselor that your transcripts, letters of recommendation, and test scores have been sent to your prospective schools.
  6. Send an email or make a phone call to make sure your colleges have received your application. While you’re at it, check to see that they have everything else they need, including your transcripts and financial aid material.

Spring (March-May)

  1. Once you receive all your responses from colleges, make your decision
  2. Verify financial aid before making final decision
  3. Make sure final transcripts are sent to college choice
  4. Prepare for and take AP tests
  5. Different high schools have different graduation requirements (so please check your local listings for changes in programming), but these tips can help ensure you graduate on time:
    • Take any final tests and complete any final projects that will complete your academic career.
    • Double check with your advisor to make sure you satisfy all academic graduation requirements.
    • Stop by the front office to verify that there are no holds on your record. Many schools require students to pay all outstanding fees and fines before they can walk for graduation.
    • Mail out graduations announcements to friends and family.
    • Order your cap and gown.

Summer (June-August)

  1. Start your last ever high school summer job
  2. Attend your college’s summer orientation
  3. Apply for student housing
  4. Begin preparing for college coursework
  5. Explore campus life
