Dogs… fun, adorable and loyal, we try to take good care of our pets, but sometimes it’s hard to tell what’s good for them. Here are 5 foods that are toxic to dogs.

1. Chocolate

In large enough amounts, chocolate and cocoa products can kill your dog. The toxic component of chocolate is theobromine. Humans easily metabolize theobromine, but dogs process it much more slowly, allowing it to build up to toxic levels in their system.

2. Avocado

Avocado contains a toxin called persin which is poisonous to dogs and cats as well. Ingestion of this fruit can cause an upset stomach in most dogs, but pit is the biggest worry, if swallowed it can cause an obstruction.

3. Grapes

Although the exact substance that causes the toxic reaction is not yet known, grape and raisin toxicity is well documented. Don’t  feed your dogs grapes and raisins because even small amounts can prove to be fatally toxic to a dog.

4. Coffee

Coffee is toxic to dogs, especially in big amounts, it is not safe for them to consume even the slightest taste of it.

5. Xylitol

Xylitol is a sugar substitute used in sugar-free gum and other products, it is extremely toxic to dogs and can cause hypoglycemia, seizures, liver failure or even death to dogs.
